As we approach the official start to spring and take time to tidy up, refresh and generally reset so many aspects of our lives, I ask you: Why neglect the skin? If you're at all like me, even though you spent the winter months moisturizing dutifully, your dull, scaly arms and legs are begging for a little extra attention. Enter: Lilis Instant Peel, the most satisfying body exfoliator I've ever tried.
I first heard about Lilis — a body-care brand inspired by "Korean skin-care innovation and spa culture" — from beloved NYC facialist Elizabeth Grace Hand, who sung its praises in a holiday gift guide we did last year. "Nothing makes the skin quite as soft as this magical fragrance-free body exfoliating gel," she told me at the time. "It's gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin," she added, noting that "everyone needs" it. Needless to say, I was sold and immediately had to try it for myself.
Let me just say: Elizabeth didn't overhype this stuff. In fact, "magical" may be underplaying it. It's easily the most effective body exfoliator I've tried (and I've tried many), despite also being one of the gentlest. It's inspired by Korean spas, which are known for intensive full-body scrub treatments that leave skin seal-level slippery and smooth. And this is like getting one of those in your own bathroom.
The lightweight gel comes in a pump-top bottle; it's meant to be applied to dry skin, but since the formula really lives up to its "instant" claims, things get messy quickly — I suggest hopping into the shower to use it before you turn on the water. As you massage the product in a circular motion (per the bottle's instructions), clumps of dead skin cells immediately start to work their way free. I thought it was just the product itself pilling up (and some of it is), but then I looked at the palms of my hands and saw the entire surface layer of them coming... free. Spooky and gross? Yes. But also deeply satisfying? Also a big yes.
The chemical exfoliators in the formula dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, ungluing them from skin's surface and whisking them away as you massage and then rinse. If you have lots of dead skin cells built up, like I did, you'll feel sort of like a snake shedding its skin. The dead skin cells comes off in little clumpy bits that, again, are kind of gross, but preferable to having said cells just chilling on your skin's surface, making you look ashy and pasty.
And despite how intense the exfoliation seems, it's shockingly gentle — there's zero burning, stinging, redness or irritation, which is part of the reason I initially doubted it was even doing anything. People with sensitive skin can use it, and it's also fine to do a treatment multiple times a week (the brand suggests two to three). That's because the formula is spiked with glycerin for moisture and arbutin for brightening, as well as multiple soothing and anti-inflammatory ingredients. After using it, skin isn't just slippery and smooth: It's also bright, even, supple and ready to lap up any other topicals, like serums or moisturizers, you slather on.
This product is the ideal start to my Everything Shower routine, and my singular complaint is that I wish it came in a bigger bottle.
