📰 How I Shop: Corey Fogelmanis
✨ Fashion Insights & Trends:
We all buy clothes, but no two people shop the same. It can be a social experience, and a deeply personal one; at times, it can be impulsive and entertaining, at others, purpose-driven, a chore. Where do you shop? When do you shop? How do you decide what you need, how much to spend and what's "you"? These are some of the questions we're putting to prominent figures in our column "How I Shop."
Corey Fogelmanis takes a long pause as he ponders how he'd describe his relationship with fashion. I'm prepared to hear descriptors like "fun" or "experimental." He was a Disney Channel kid, after all. As a child, he was living the life most kids fantasize about, walking red carpets and sharing spaces with the best of young Hollywood. What better fashion playground could he have?
But as he takes a breath, he lands on "stressful."
"I feel like I didn't quite know how to dress myself," he tells Fashionista. "I was a very skinny kid, and I was very insecure about that."
It wasn't for lack of effort: The now-26-year-old holds a fond memory of running around the mall with his mom on the hunt for an outfit for the Radio Disney Music Awards. "We just did not know what we were doing," he laughs. "But bless my mother for everything, and for being along for the ride with me."

We look through photos of his earliest red carpet years — 2014 and 2015 — when he'd walk into events wearing jeans, T-shirts and sneakers, with maybe a blazer or leather jacket thrown in an attempt to spruce things up. "Looking back on these photos is scary at times, and it's crazy that it all just exists forever, but at the same time, I was a baby and I was figuring it out." he says.
He feels he started to come into his own sartorially around 16 years old, when he began working with stylist Franzy Staedter. Before that, he'd just agree with any and all outfit decisions made for him, out of fear of hurting people's feelings. But with Staedter, he was encouraged to speak his mind and express what he liked. Since then, Fogelmanis has been making his mark in the fashion space. He's attended events wearing brands like Mugler and Celine, and sat front row for Balenciaga, Ann Demeulemeester, Rabanne and Saint Laurent.

The actor's journey, in many ways, mirrors that of his character, Ben De Backer, in the upcoming film "I Wish You All the Best" (out Nov. 7), directed by Tommy Dorfman. In it, Ben, a high schooler who was kicked out of their house after coming out as non-binary, moves in with their sister and unexpectedly finds community at their new school.
"I can relate to Ben in a sense, where there's something comforting about hiding yourself because then you don't have to worry about people's opinions," Fogelmanis explains. "Ben really used clothes to protect themself early on in the movie. As it goes on, you really see it become a source of joy, creativity and confidence for them."
Below, the "My Life with the Walter Boys" star discusses his favorite looks from the film, his love of thrifting and his fashion ambitions.

"My personal style today is ever evolving. It really depends on the day. I have a gradient of pants in my closet that go from very baggy to not baggy at all. Some of them, I actually took from the 'I Wish You All the Best' wardrobe department because Ben had some great jeans. I also find myself really drawn to a certain color on a certain day.
"[My favorite outfit from 'I Wish You All the Best'] is this one look that Ben wears to the roller rink scene: It's this gray pleated Heaven by Marc Jacobs skirt, and it has these white little ribbons on the side. We paired that with a tight shirt that was a little turtleneck, and then this Kim Petras shirt. That was my favorite [outfit] from the get-go, and I was so excited to film those scenes in that outfit. It just felt so cute.
"I am so inspired by my sister. She goes into my dad's closet and just steals his things. She thrifts a bunch and she just has such a great eye for great patterns. Whenever I go visit her, I pack very light and just live out of her closet. Also, I saw this photo of Amelia Earhart recently, and she was just so beautifully buttoned up, and I loved her bomber jacket. So I feel like if I could dress like anyone, it would probably be her.

"My favorite off-duty outfit is a pair of Carhartt pants. I love something with a bit of durability — if it has holes in it, even better. I love a Dri-FIT shirt, so a baggy pant and a really tight top feels like a go-to for me.
"When I'm doing press and stuff, there's a whole world that's opened up to me in terms of just what I have access to and what stories I want to tell with what I'm wearing. But for the most part, every opportunity I have to play a part or do press for things is an opportunity to figure out what I like. It's been so exciting to start to have more of a say in what it is that I wear and do and where I am going. It has me very excited for the future.
"I would describe [my red carpet approach] as figuring it out in real time. Now, how I like to get ready is to put on an album that I'm loving. Before the 'I Wish You All the Best' premiere the other day, I was listening to 'Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You,' the new Ethel Cain album. Finding my center is very important and being around people who make me feel safe and comfortable.

"When we premiered 'I Wish You All the Best' at South by Southwest in Austin last year, I got to wear this borderline skin-tight leather suit from Celine. I felt like a million bucks in that suit. I had these black leather cowboy boots, so it had a little bit of that cowboy influence in there, but it was a perfect blending of New York and Austin. It also had these white little ruffles on the collar. That's probably one of my favorite looks that I've ever worn.
"I think Prada is just so effortlessly handsome, and I love what they're doing, so that would be awesome [to work with them]. I've never gotten to wear them before. Also, YSL is just classic; I love them so much.
"I definitely shop in-store. I don't know how people shop online without trying stuff on.
"I'm much more of a thrifter than I am a shopper. There are some incredible places that I found in my travels. There's this place in Calgary — where we shoot this show I work on — called Wild Rabbit Vintage, and it has some of my favorite Western wear I've ever found. The owners source stuff from all over Canada, and sometimes they go down into the States and upper Montana and they just bring stuff back and it's just incredible vintage. I got this pair of '70s pants that I wore to a party a couple of months ago. I love unique things.

"I thrifted this floor-length gray trench coat on the Jersey Shore two years ago, and it's just my favorite thing I've ever found and worn in my life. I hope I have that for the rest of time.
"[My fashion future] looks like more time spent in Paris. I got to spend a week there this past fashion week, and I rented a little apartment. Just living in that city and getting to know the people there and how things work is something that I'm really looking forward to."
