Erica Taylor may be a social media phenomenon, with more than 4 million combined Instagram and TikTok followers, but she's no Gen Zer — and she doesn't want to be. Known for channeling her 25+ years of experience as a makeup artist and beauty expert into educational, candid tutorials, she primarily caters to an over-40 audience. And her witty one-offs and effective, accessible beauty tips have made her one to watch in the industry. (The New York Times recently dubbed her "Social Media's Midlife Makeup Guru.")
She's also the author of a forthcoming book, "The Magic of Makeup: Your Handbook for a Youthful, Radiant Look," set to publish next April, and recently served as a keynote speaker at Canyon Ranch's "Enchant the Ranch" event at its Lenox, Mass. location, which Fashionista attended. I took the opportunity to sit down with Taylor to get her true fashion and beauty favorites, including the skin-care product she buys in multiples, the one beauty tip she gives all her friends and the drugstore beauty find she considers a "luxury product."
What's a luxury beauty item you're into right now?
I'm going to confess, I did buy a few of the Louis [Vuitton] lipsticks and at the time I thought there were like $90, but it turns out they were $160, and I was like, okay, well, there's that.
How about a drugstore/mass market beauty item?
The new L'Oréal Le Duo is very cool because it's like bringing more of a luxury-type product to mass. It's giving luxe for less. [Editor's note: Taylor is a spokesperson for L'Oréal Paris.]
What's a beauty staple you love so much you've bought multiples?
Eye balms. I have a few that I like. There's RoC Eye Balm, there's the Peach & Lily Balm, Kora Eye Oil — I love all the lubrication under the eye. I think that's a very missed product for us, and I buy multiples. I think people don't realize that you just touch up a little bit of moisture and it'll make it look way better.
Oh, and my new lip color that I collab'd with Doll 10 — it's the perfect nude that everyone has to have.
What's an affordable fashion item on your shopping list?
I would say Larroudé has great boots and I love those. They have these great platforms and they're usually around $200 or less.
What's the last product a friend influenced you to buy?
Oh, Doris Dalton from Doll 10 just influenced me to purchase some Oakcha fragrance today because she smelled delicious.
What's one piece of beauty advice we could all use?
Exfoliating your face. I will tell my friends, 'The one thing you're probably not doing is exfoliating your face.' Like the First Aid Beauty Pads? For sure.
Are there any luxury fashion items you're currently lusting after?
I was considering getting a little mini cow-print Prada bag to match my headband. I haven't pulled the trigger, but a little one. I just feel like that would be a cute situation.
What's your go-to gift this holiday season?
I mean, give your friend — especially one that's a little makeup-challenged — my book that's coming out. It's pre-selling on Amazon, and it's going to be all of my fun tips I'm known for on different models, not just my own face. And it's a really fun read.
