📰 An Anti-AI Protest Is Quietly Taking Place on Fashion Week Runways

✨ Fashion Insights & Trends:

As AI continues to come for creative industries like fashion — which Gucci's Demna recently acknowledged via (intentionally?) controversial AI ads — designers are starting to push back against the picture-perfect aesthetics it generates.

WGSN's Fall 2027 Prints and Graphics Forecast points to recent examples of designers favoring purposefully unpolished looks. The report signals that, as AI visuals become more generic, designers are leaning into process and materiality to deliberately reveal the human hand behind a garment.

In other words, machines are out, human touch is in.

"In a culture of constant connectivity, switching off has become a luxury, and that desire is translating into fashion that celebrates time-honored techniques, visible handiwork and material integrity," Hannah Watkins, head of Prints and Graphics at WGSN, tells Fashionista over email. "As machines master once-human skills, the question 'What makes us human?' grows louder, prompting designers to champion authenticity as a powerful differentiator in an increasingly homogenized market."

WGSN titled this shift towards process-driven aesthetics "#WorkinProgress." Within that are specific graphics, slogans and prints forecasted to take center stage between now and 2028. Examples include prints and text that appear hand-drawn; mixed or collage-like fonts; brush-stroked and visibly doodled florals; and faded, worn or washed-out textures.

The #WorkinProgress trend is already taking shape on the Fall 2026 runways: Prada presented designs featuring intentional abrasions; Emilia Wickstead embraced painterly florals with an unfinished effect; Ashlyn showcased raw-edge tailoring with visible topstitching; and Henrik Vibskov reworked classic houndstooth with sketchy, hand-drawn updates.

"Worn finishes, stained cuffs and intentional abrasions position age and wear as new markers of authenticity and modern luxury," Watkins says. "The message is: Show the workings, celebrate the hand and let imperfection speak."

This chase after visible human craft hasn't appeared out of nowhere — consumers seem to desire it. Outside of fashion, analog hobbies like book clubs and crafting have become popular among Gen Z as they grow tired of digital content and crave human connectivity.

"Shoppers are increasingly drawn to pieces that feel human: visibly worked, slightly imperfect and rich with story and process," Watkins says. "Rather than seeing flaws as faults, they'll view them as proof of authenticity and value."

Artisanal craftsmanship is becoming an important marker of luxury status. Throughout 2025, brands including Bottega Veneta, Loewe and Bally centered campaigns around handmade craft, care and intention. In January, Miu Miu unveiled its "Making of Old" project, an initiative showcasing the complexity of research, time and love that go into its leather treatment, from sourcing to aging.

"Fashion is actively reclaiming the value of the human hand in an era saturated with AI-generated gloss," Watkins asserts. She predicts that marketing will increasingly spotlight craft transparency, and brands will prioritize partnerships with artisans. "In a market flooded with sameness, visible creativity and genuine cultural exchange are fast becoming fashion's most powerful currency."
