And just like that, Pieter Mulier is no longer unemployed: On Thursday, Versace announced that the Belgian designer will take over as Chief Creative Officer, effective July 1. He succeeds Dario Vitale, who unexpectedly stepped down in early December after only one season at the helm. The news also comes less than a week after Mulier announced his departure from Alaïa.
"When we considered the Versace acquisition, we identified Pieter Mulier as the right person for the brand," Versace Executive Chairman Lorenzo Bertelli said in a press statement. "We believe that he can truly unlock Versace's full potential and that he will be able to engage in a fruitful dialogue with the brand's strong legacy. We are excited to begin this journey together."
The Belgian designer has a strong fashion resume: For more than a decade, he worked under Raf Simons across Simons' various creative directorships. In 2021, Mulier stepped into his first leadership role as the creative director of Alaïa. Over the past four years, he established a distinct style and generated significant industry buzz for the brand. Alaïa's sharp, architectural designs and timeless, collectible accessories won over a broader, younger fan base, as well as many celebrity fans (e.g., Rihanna).
In his new role, Mulier is tasked with maintaining Versace's well-known image, all while bringing his own fresh take. Bertelli reportedly wants to keep the style established by Gianni and Donatella Versace.
Mulier joins a long list of new high-profile appointments at major luxury houses, including Balmain's Antonin Tron, Hermès' Grace Wales Bonner, Proenza Schouler's Rachel Scott and Marni's Meryll Rogge.
