✨ Fashion Insights & Trends:

Carven's top design position has sat vacant for just over a month following Mark Thomas' April departure, but now, a new designer is taking over the French fashion house. Kai Nesselrath, a German designer born and raised in Rome, is Carven's new design director, the maison announced on Monday. Nesselrath will show his debut runway collection during Paris Fashion Week this fall.

"Excited to join Carven, with lightness and optimism," Nesselrath said in a statement. "I love clothes, spaces and conversations that encourage breathing. It's an honor to keep Madame Carven's values alive. I am very grateful to Shawna [Tao, Carven CEO] for her trust and the journey ahead together."

Nesselrath studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma, took courses at Central Saint Martins and later graduated from Polimoda in 2015. He got his start at Chanel under Karl Lagerfeld, and then pivoted to Saint Laurent, where he worked for a decade and ascended to become the house's womenswear head designer.

Nesselrath's appointment marks the next step in Carven's revival, which was first started in 2023. Carven is focused on reconnecting with its original vision from 1945, when namesake founder Marie-Louise Carven first opened the couture house at the Rond-Point des Champs-Élysées. The house aims to deliver "a distinctly French and inclusive approach to fashion, built on uncompromising creativity, product excellence and relevance to modern life," according to a press release.

Carven's design director announcement coincides with other shifts in the fashion industry's changing landscape, with Henry Zankov taking over at Diane von Furstenberg, A.P.C. tapping Ludivine Poiblanc and various acquisitions (Roberto Cavalli, Marc Jacobs, Giambattista Valli).

"We are very pleased to welcome Kai to Carven," Tao said. "A new generation's perspective on the world feels especially important today. The essence of Carven is a fresh and courageous creator's spirit, and we believe Kai is uniquely suited to interpret and express it."
