I've dealt with acne-prone skin since One Direction came in third place on "The X Factor U.K.," so trust me when I say I've tried a lot of exfoliating and treatment cleansers. I fell victim to abrasive scrubs that I hoped would strong-arm the excess sebum out of my pores (I'm looking at you, St. Ives Apricot Scrub), and when that didn't work, I reached for drugstore cleansers with the highest percentage of salicylic acid I could find. After disrupting my skin barrier throughout my teenage years, I've finally entered a new era of gentle exfoliation and smoother texture. One of the driving forces behind my skin's rebound? Prequel's Gleanser + SA Non-Drying Salicylic Acid Cleanser.

Founded by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Samantha Ellis, Prequel focuses on restoring the skin barrier and intentional use of active ingredients. Its Gleanser + SA stands apart from other cleansers on the market because it's formulated with 50% glycerin, which is a humectant that draws moiture into the skin to boost hydration and elasticity. The high concentration of glycerin gives the formula its signature goopy texture that transforms into a creamy lather. It also boasts zinc PCA (a hydrating combination of zinc salt and L-PCA) to help normalize sebum production.

However, the star of the show is the cleanser's 1% salicylic acid that works to slough off dead skin cells and reveal smoother skin. When combined with glycerin and zinc PCA, the exfoliating cleanser leaves my usually reactive skin feeling (and looking!) fresh and renewed, rather than tight and dry. It also checks off multiple musts on my sensitive skin checklist: It's fragrance-free, hypoallergenic, dermatologist-tested and accepted by both the National Eczema Association and the National Psoriasis Foundation.

Beyond the cleanser's effective formula, the best part is its price. You get 13.5 fluid ounces of product for $20. It took me a year of daily use to go through one full bottle, even though I often found myself reaching for Prequel's Gleanser + SA over other high-end products in my skin-care stash.

If salicylic acid isn't your go-to exfoliant, Prequel's Gleanser family also includes a 5% glycolic acid formulation for smoother skin and reduced congestion. Or perhaps you'd rather stick to the OG Gleanser, which is a refreshing burst of hydration with its soothing 50% glycerin, arginine, oat extract and aloe.

Since first trying — and loving — Prequel's Gleanser + SA two years ago, I'm now working through my second full-size bottle (not counting my many empty travel sizes), making this one of the longest skin-care relationships of my life.

Prequel Gleanser + SA Non-Drying Salicylic Acid Cleanser, $20, available here.
